Jakarta. After sweltering in Jakarta’s stifling heat for two days, the Reds from Perth, Australia, defeated ISCI Hockey Jakarta 1-0 in the final of the field hockey tournament at Gelora Bung Karno Sports Kompleks on Sunday.
The Reds, in their first visit to Indonesia’s capital, played a controlled game to beat ISCI team, which hosted the tournament. A deflected goal by Gilles Ducnome proved the difference between the two teams.
The final game was played in front an enthusiastic crowd, which was made up of teams from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Germany and Indonesia. All of the teams brought large contingents.
Visitors from ITHC Hamburg reached as far as the semifinals.
Dieter Geuber, captain of the Reds, thanked the organizers. “We are happy to win but more importantly we made new friends, really enjoyed being in Jakarta and are so pleased we were able to be part of this fantastic hockey event,” he said.
The annual event has been held in its current format for 16 years now, with club teams traveling from across the world to be in Jakarta for a weekend of field hockey.
