Prosecutors Seek 1.5 Years in Jail for Suspect in Indramayu Power Plant Graft Case
Bandung. Prosecutors are seeking an 18-month prison sentence for a former district head in West Java standing trial for corruption in a project to build a power station.
Prosecutors at the Bandung Anti-Corruption Court on Monday also asked for a Rp 200 million ($15,200) fine for Irianto Mahfudz Sidik Syafiuddin, the former head of Indramayu district, for his role in allegedly marking up the price of the land needed for the power plant in 2006.
The Attorney General’s Office contends that the practice resulted in a Rp 42 billion loss to the state.
The defendant, better known as Yance and who is the current speaker of the provincial legislature, stands accused of abusing his power as district head during negotiations to free up the land for the project.
Prosecutors allege that he conspired with the owner of the land, Agung Rijoto Mohammad Ichwan — the former head of the district land acquisition committee, or PTUN — and with Daddy Haryadi, the former PTUN secretary, to mark up the price of the 82 hectares of land slated for the power plant site.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla, a former chairman of the Golkar Party, of which Yance is a stalwart member, testified in the trial last month, claiming that Yance followed the proper procedures and managed to finish the project ahead of time. He did not actually address the mark-up allegations.
