Batik Air Flight Delayed After Bomb Joke, Second Incident in a Week
Jakarta. A Batik Air flight from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport heading to Palembang was delayed at 6:25 a.m. on Wednesday after a passenger joked to cabin crew about carrying a bomb onto the aircraft.
The passenger, identified only as Y.U.S., 57, said he had a bomb in his backpack when a flight attendant tried to help him place it in the overhead compartment.
“The flight attendant was lifting the heavy backpack and she asked what the passenger had in it. He answered that he was carrying a bomb,” Soekarno-Hatta airport police chief Sr. Comr. C.H. Pattopoi told Detik.com on Wednesday.
The flight attendant immediately reported the incident to the pilot who forwarded the report to Aviation Security (Avsec).
The passenger was brought in for questioning to the Lion Air’s Avsec room and told officers that what he said was an off-the-cuff remark meant in jest.
Other passengers were asked to wait at the waiting room at the gate C5.
The flight eventually left for Palembang at 9 a.m.
A navy officer was questioned by Soekarno-Hatta International Airport authorities last week after he, too, joked about carrying a bomb on a Lion Air flight heading to Padang, West Sumatra.
