Bomb Joke Could Land Plane Passenger 1 Year in Jail
Jakarta. A passenger who joked about carrying a bomb in his backpack on a Batik Air flight on Wednesday could face one year in jail.
The passenger, who has been identified only as Y.U.S., could be charged under the 2009 Aviation Law for giving fake information that could have put a flight in danger, a spokesperson from the Transportation Ministry told detik.com on Thursday.
“We are still investigating the case. Based on aviation laws, he could face one year in jail,” spokesman Rudi Ricardo said.
Rudi implored the public not to joke about bombs on planes.
The man joked he had a bomb in his backpack when a flight attendant tried to help him place it in the overhead compartment.
After the incident was reported to the pilot, Aviation Security (Avsec) screened Y.U.S.’s backpack again but found only clothes, a laptop, toiletries and a phone charger.
The flight from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was delayed 90 minutes.
