Express Taxi Takes a Swim in River Near Epicentrum Mall
Jakarta. An Express taxi took a dive into the Cideng River along Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said late Wednesday night.
The taxi and its driver plunged off a roughly 15-meter concrete embankment and into a section of the river that runs between Kuningan’s Epicentrum Walk mall and the Taman Rasuna Apartment complex.
The incident occurred at roughly 11:20 p.m., according to eyewitnesses on the scene.
The driver, whose identity could not be immediately determined by the Jakarta Globe, was rushed to MMC Hospital, roughly a block away, where he remains under treatment, according to Adj. Comr. Yajianto of the Jakarta Police.
Yajianto said the driver did not appear to be drunk when rescued from the river, but it is also not immediately clear how he apparently lost control of the taxi.
A partially submerged white taxi’s crushed roof and windshield could be seen floating in the Cideng’s stagnant, brown water; the taxi’s crumpled trunk hung ajar, its license plate (B1427ETC) facing skyward — as if announcing itself to gawking crowds.
Efforts to raise the taxi using a pair of tow trucks were still underway as of 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.
