Huge Pot Haul: 2.1 Tons of Aceh Weed Seized
Jakarta. Police say they’re rolling up a network smuggling large quantities of marijuana from Aceh to Jakarta, having already seized a total 2,116 kilograms of the substance in three separate shipments.
The dried cannabis was being smuggled to Jakarta in trucks also carrying rotting fruit, to hide the smell of the drugs, police say.
“A total of nine suspects were arrested in these raids,” Brig. Gen. Anjan Pramuka, head of the narcotics force of the National Police’s detectives unit, said in a press release on Monday. “We are currently trying to establish where the production field is in Aceh, so that we can break up the network.”
The biggest shipment of drugs was intercepted on May 1 on a toll road in Slipi, West Jakarta. Two men were arrested as they were driving a truck carrying 1.4 tons of weed from Aceh through Medan, Palembang and Lampung to the capital.
Other shipments were intercepted in South Sumatra on April 10 and in Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta, on April 13.
Separately, the South Jakarta Police also seized a shipment of 166 kilograms of weed from Aceh in the Sukmajaya subdistrict of Depok, just south of the capital, on April 24.
Anjan said all the confiscated drugs would be destroyed at the National Police Headquarters in South Jakarta on Monday afternoon.
