    Amazon, Apple, others to testify before U.S. Senate on data privacy September 26

    Six major Web companies and internet-service providers, including AT&T Inc, Twitter Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google, will detail their consumer data privacy practices to a U.S. Senate panel on Sept. 26, according to a congressional statement on Wednesday.

    The Senate hearing will give the six technology-related companies, which also include Amazon.com Inc, Apple Inc and Charter Communications Inc, “an opportunity to explain their approaches to privacy,” said U.S. Senator John Thune, the Republican chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.

    They will also testify on “how they plan to address new requirements from the European Union and California, and what Congress can do to promote clear privacy expectations without hurting innovation,” Thune said.

    Apple reports an almost 40 per cent fall in 2nd quarter earnings as global smartphone shipments slow

    Apple wipes thousands of gambling apps after China backlash

    Apple Inc.’s pulled thousands of gambling apps from its Chinese store after the nation’s state-run broadcaster accused the smartphone maker of dragging its feet on cleaning up banned content.

    Government-controlled media including China Central Television attacked Apple this month for hosting illegal and fake lottery-ticket apps, which they said resulted in massive losses for hoodwinked users. On Sunday, CCTV reported that Apple pulled at least 4,000 apps tagged with the keyword “gambling” on Aug. 9 alone.

    The U.S. company confirmed the action and said it was simply complying with regulations. But it underscores both Beijing’s resurgent crackdown on all forms of online content from games to social media and video services, as well as the difficulties facing foreign companies that do business in the world’s second-largest economy.

    Apple probing complaints of fraudulent iTunes charges; thousands of dollars deducted from bank accounts

    Several Apple customers are complaining of fraudulent purchases made on their iTunes accounts, causing deductions of up to thousands of dollars.

    An Apple spokesman, responding to queries on Sunday (July 22), would not comment on the extent of the problem but said that the company is looking into the matter.

    Channel NewsAsia first reported Sunday that “dozens” were affected. The exact number is unclear, but the problem appears to have hit customers of most major banks here.

    Mr Vincent Tan, head of credit cards at OCBC Bank, said that the bank had detected and investigated unusual transactions on 58 cardholders’ accounts.

    “Upon confirmation that these were fraudulent transactions, we deployed the necessary counter-measures and are currently assisting the affected cardholders via the chargeback process,” he said.
