    Go-Jek kicks off maiden operation in Vietnam

    Go-Jek, the Indonesian ride-hailing app, kicked off its maiden operation in Vietnam on Wednesday, the first step of the company’s plan to expand into Southeast Asia.

    In Vietnam, Go-Jek is collaborating with a local team led by digital entrepreneur Nguyen Vu Duc under the brand Go-Viet.

    “We are very impressed with Go-Jek’s influence and we share the same vision,” Go-Viet CEO Vu Duc told journalists on Wednesday. He said Go-Jek was Go-Viet’s strategic partner in terms of technological and financial matters.

    Go-Jek corporate affairs chief Nila Marita said it decided to collaborate with a local partner because local knowledge of the market was key to win the hearts of customers.

    Vu Duc said the company was expected to have four services — Go-Bike, Go-Car, Go-Food and e-wallet – early next year.

    Indonesia launches ASEAN Car Free Day

    Indonesia hosted the ASEAN Car Free Day (CFD) in Jakarta on Sunday, which coincided with a performance of the poco-poco dance by some 65,000 people in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest line dance (multiple venues).

    The ASEAN CFD is a Health Ministry effort at the regional level to promote a healthy lifestyle and decrease air pollution, which is supported by the health ministries of ASEAN member states.

    Jakarta first introduced Car Free Day in 2012, and it has been deemed successful in encouraging the public to get involved in physical activities. Other cities across the archipelago have since introduced their own car-free days.

    oordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani said in a statement that the government was thankful for the role ASEAN had given to Indonesia to launch the ASEAN CFD.

    “Seeing the high participation of the public during CFD, we are committed to continuing this activity in Indonesia and its continuation at a regional level,” she said, adding that the launch was a present from Indonesia to ASEAN, which marked its 51st anniversary on Aug. 8.

    Singapore to help ASEAN better tackle climate change with new programme

    There will be a slew of Singapore-led programmes from this year until 2020 as part of efforts to help ASEAN countries tackle climate change.

    Under the Climate Action Package (CAP) launched on Tuesday (Jul 10), Singapore will organise programmes to develop capacity in key areas such as disaster risk reduction, climate science, flood management and long-term mitigation and adaptation strategies.

    The courses under CAP will be refreshed annually and the initiative will be reviewed prior to 2020.

    “We hope that the CAP will be useful to ASEAN countries as they ramp up actions to address climate change,” said Singapore’s Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli at the Special ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Climate Action (SAMCA).

    The special meeting, attended by delegates from ASEAN, was an initiative by Singapore, as the 2018 ASEAN Chair, to provide a regional platform to discuss climate action efforts.
