    Indonesia promises haze-free Asian Games

    The government is determined to carry out all necessary measures to prevent forest and land fires from spreading on the island of Sumatra, as the Asia Games are set to kick off on Aug. 18 in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, at the peak of the dry season.

    Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto held a meeting on Tuesday with relevant officials, discussing anticipatory measures to address the potential increase in hot spots.

    “Learning from our experience […] and with solid coordination [among stakeholders] as well as proper procedures in both prevention and mitigation, all regions are prepared to mitigate potential forest fires,” Wiranto said on Tuesday.

    The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected 169 hot spots in Sumatra Island on Tuesday with 47 hot spots in South Sumatra alone. Riau recorded an increase in hot spots to 90 from 65 in the previous day while there were 11 hot spots in Jambi and 55 hot spots in Bangka Belitung province.

    The Environment and Forestry Ministry’s director general of climate change, Ruandha Agung Sugadirman, said a coordinated team comprising relevant officials, including police and Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel, routinely carried out patrols in areas prone to forest fires.

    Sixteen helicopters have been on standby across South Sumatra and can be deployed for water bombing at any time when forest fires are detected. Another 10 helicopters are also on standby in Riau, Ruandha said.

    The government has also used 51 tons of salt to intensify cloud-seeding operations to help stimulate rainfall since May, he said, adding that rain had fallen in the province from Monday evening to Tuesday morning.

    The Ministry of Transportation immediately conducts a comprehensive evaluation of the operation of the South Sumatra Light Rail Transit (LRT) following the sudden stopping of the Palembang LRT strike, South Sumatra, on Sunday (12/8) evening. The strike that occurred at the end of last week was not the first, but it has happened repeatedly over the LRT which began full operation earlier this month.

    “This evaluation is expected to provide a solution to the improvement of the overall operational performance of the LRT, especially in order to support the 18th Asian Games which will soon be held in the City of Palembang,” said Director General of Railways of the Ministry of Transportation Zulfikri, Monday (August 13)

    Asian Games: North Korean athletes arrive in South for joint training

    North Korean athletes arrived in the South on Sunday (Jul 29) for joint training ahead of the Asian Games next month, the latest effort at rare cross-border sports diplomacy.

    The two Koreas agreed last month to field joint teams in three sports – canoeing, rowing and women’s basketball – at the Asian Games  in Jakarta and Palembang from Aug 18 to Sep 2.

    Dressed in matching light blue outfits, the delegation of 34 athletes and coaches landed at Incheon International Airport via Beijing.

    Their exact schedules have yet to be determined but the North Koreans are expected to begin training with their South Korean teammates next week.

    It is the first time North and South Korea have formed unified teams to compete at the Asian Games.

    The two countries – which are technically still at war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice instead of a peace treaty – will also march together at the opening and closing ceremonies in Indonesia.

    The move follows an agreement between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the South’s president Moon Jae-in at their summit in April.

    Sporting cooperation helped spark the current diplomatic thaw between the two Koreas after the North sent a high-level delegation and athletes to the Winter Olympics held in the South in February.

    Diplomatic efforts have gathered pace since then, leading to a landmark summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump in Singapore in June.

    Indonesia president Joko Widodo formally invited the Korean leaders to the Asian Games, although it is unclear if either has responded.

    The two Koreas formed their first-ever unified Olympic team – a joint women’s ice hockey squad – for February’s games in the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang.

    The idea for a joint team initially sparked a backlash in the South on the grounds that Seoul was depriving its own athletes of the chance to compete.

    Online ‘ojek’ drivers to protest during Asian Games opening

    Drivers of app-based ride-hailing services are threatening to stage a protest during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Asian Games.

    Two-Wheel Action Movement (Garda) leader Igun Wicaksono said the ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers demanded an increase in the fare from Rp 1,200 (83 US cents) per kilometer to Rp 3,000, like when online ojek started to operate in the country in 2015.

    Igun explained that the rally, dubbed Aksi 188 Ojek Online (online ojek action 188) in reference to the date of the Games’ opening, had been scheduled for Aug. 18 because one of the ride-hailing app companies was a main sponsor of the Asian Games.

    “The app company is a sponsor for the Asian Games by extorting the drivers’ blood and tears,” he said, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

    Igun said 20 percent was deducted from every transaction made by the drivers for various expenses, including income tax. However, the drivers were never shown any proof of the tax payment.

    Igun said that was why the drivers alleged that the company was sponsored the Asian Games using the deducted funds.

    From cloud seeding to vehicle curbs, Indonesia fights pollution ahead of Asian Games

    As Indonesia prepares to host thousands of competitors and fans at next month’s Asian Games, pollution concerns have flared following a spell of unhealthy air in Jakarta and forest fire hotspots near the second venue, Palembang in South Sumatra.

    Traffic congestion in Indonesia’s sprawling capital of 10 million consistently ranks among the world’s worst, and it has long struggled to boost air quality, regularly rated as unsafe by the World Health Organization (WHO).

    Organizers of the Asian Games, set to run from August 18 to September 2, drawing nearly 17,000 athletes and officials and more than 100,000 spectators, said they were working with city officials to tackle the pollution.

    Strategies being considered include wider curbs on private cars depending on whether their licence-plate numbers are odd or even, creating special lanes for the sports event, and building gardens.

    Indonesia is following a path blazed by other large Asian cities, such as Beijing, which adopted traffic curbs and closed factories to improve air during the 2008 Olympics.

    Jakarta’s average score on the Air Quality Index (AQI) had exceeded 100 in the last week, said Budi Haryanto, an environmental health expert at the University of Indonesia.

    “Air quality is unhealthy, and this with the odd and even vehicle plate policy,” he told Reuters.

    By 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the air quality in Jakarta stood in the “unhealthy” range at 171, the Real-Time AQI Index showed.

    “Since athletes need to give their maximum performance for the competition, a better AQI is a must,” said Budi, who felt the optimum would be less than 50.

    Lung function is affected after over two months of daily exposure to an index reading below 200, Budi said, but gasoline emissions, a frequent pollutant in Jakarta, can be linked to cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, besides cancer.

    Fire Hot Spots 

    The smaller city of Palembang generally has cleaner air than Jakarta, but can suffer the ravages of forest and land fires, sometimes blanketing the area in a thick haze.

    “The primary pollutant sources in Jakarta are mostly traffic and industry, while in Palembang, it is mainly from peatland burning,” said Hsiang-He Lee of the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology.

    “Now is the peak of the burning season.”

    Indonesia’s weather authorities are monitoring 12 fire “hotspots” in South Sumatra, they said this week.

    Authorities are looking into the possibility of cloud seeding to combat the hotspots by triggering rainfall in dry areas with flares of salt shot into suitable clouds.

    The strategy was successful in 2011, when Indonesia hosted the Southeast Asian Games in Palembang, but would depend on weather conditions, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman of the disaster management agency.

    Erick Thohir, head of the Asian Games organizing committee, told reporters last week he understood concerns over the haze, but believed efforts to control the fires were proving successful.
