    Jokowi picks Ma’ruf Amin, key expert witness on Ahok’s blasphemy trial

    President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo announced his running mate for Indonesian 2019 election. He picks nonpolitical party figure Ma’ruf Amin.

    Ma’ruf has been a lawmaker, councilor, presidential advisory council member, supreme leader of Nahdlatul Ulama central board, and chairman of the MUI (Indonesian Ulema Council). As MUI chairman, Ma’ruf supported controversial regulations, including the Pornography Law and the joint ministeriala decree banning the activities of minority group Ahmadiyah.

    In 2017, Ma’ruf was a key expert witness in a highly publicized blasphemy trial that sent Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama to prison for two years.

    Ma’ruf Amin is also a board member of the Sharia Cooperative 212, along with Arifin Ilham and Abdullah Gymnastiar. The cooperative runs several convenience stores that are expected to create a strong Muslim economy.

    Prabowo and Sandiaga, Military-Entrepreneurs

    The Gerindra, PKS and PAN parties officially signed Prabowo’s candidacy as presidential and Sandi candidate as vice president in the 2019 Indonesian presidential election. This decision indicates that the coalition contains only three parties. Demokrat Party which had been in this coalition has not yet determined its position.

    Prabowo Subianto said Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno was willing to resign as a cadre of the Gerindra Party after being officially appointed as a vice presidential candidate in the 2019 presidential election.

    Prabowo is a retired general. With its declaration in the 2019 presidential election, Prabowo has been named as a presidential candidate three times. Prabowo had a military career for 28 years before finally going into business and politics. In the election five years ago, Prabowo lost to Joko Widodo.

    Meanwhile, Sandiaga Uno is a businessman. Sandiaga is known for providing a number of small companies that can transform into big ones. Since 2009, Sandiaga has been included in the list of 50 richest people in Indonesia by Forbes magazine. His political career reached a peak when he succeeded to become Jakarta’s deputy governor in the 2017 elections.

    Prabowo and Sandiaga will officially register as candidates on Friday, 10 August 2018. Registration of candidates marks the start of the 2019 presidential election series.

    Investors wait and see ahead of ‘year of politics’: VP

    Vice President Jusuf Kalla has said investors were in a wait and see position ahead of the presidential and legislative elections in 2019 as they were concerned about the possible impact of the political events on the country’s economy.

    He explained that investors were also still waiting for the result of the presidential election, which would likely be a rematch between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prabowo Subianto.

    “Investors are particularly concerned about the policy. Will there be any policy changes if President Joko Widodo wins? And what about if Prabowo wins?” he said in Jakarta on Thursday as reported by kontan.com.id, adding that the wait and see position affected the country’s economy.

    However, he expressed optimism that the impact of “the year of politics” was not so significant.

    He called on the media to help ensure that the “year of politics” did not cause worry and uncertainty among the people.

    Jokowi far surpasses Prabowo according to LIPI survey

    LIPI (The Indonesian Institute of Sciences) is the governmental authority for science and research in Indonesia. LIPI released a survey on the election of Indonesian presidential candidates. The result, Prabowo elektabilitas only 26.6 percent while Joko Widodo as incumbent candidate 58.2 percent. LIPI senior researcher Syamsuddin Haris said the results of this survey reflect a high level of public satisfaction to President Jokowi.
