    Energy investment in Indonesia less than half of target

    In the first half of this year, Indonesia booked US$9.48 billion in investment in the energy and mineral resources sector, only 25 percent of the full-year target of $37.2 billion.

    The oil and gas sector contributed the most to the total investment at $5.11 billion, followed by electricity at $2.83 billion.

    Meanwhile, the mining and renewable energy sectors recorded a respective $790 million and $750 million in the first half.

    Responding to the results, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry said in a presentation made available to The Jakarta Post that global energy prices had become one of the main challenges in the past three years.

    “The focus ahead is to continue with efforts that simplify regulations, strengthen investment facilities and speed up the process of making strategic decisions,” the ministry said in the presentation.

    Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry spokesman Agung Pribadi told the press last Friday that investment in oil and gas would jump significantly in the second half, as was typical.

    Bandung to lure more Muslim travelers with halal tourism

     Bandung is eyeing Muslim visitors with a halal tourism concept.

    “Halal tourism is a concept of tourism that aims to meet the needs of Muslim visitors during their vacation,” said Bandung Culture and Tourism Agency head Dewi “Kenny” Kaniasari in Bandung on Monday.

    “Bandung already has the 3As to offer in halal tourism: attractions like the angklung show routinely held in Saung Angklung Udjo; accessibility, as it can be reached by plane, train and car; and amenities, as it offers various options of accommodation, restaurants and shopping spots,” said Kenny, adding that the agency would also prioritize halal-certified eateries, fashion hotspots and prayer rooms.

    Densus 88 shoot dead three alleged terrorists in Yogyakarta

    The National Police’s counterterrorism squad Densus 88 shot dead three alleged terrorists on Jl. Kaliurang in Ngaglik district, Sleman regency, on Saturday.

    “Today we arrested three and they are dead. They were fighting the police so we took a measured action,” Yogyakarta Police spokesperson Adj. Sr. Comr. Yulianto told the media on Saturday.

    Yulianto said the alleged terrorists used a gun and sharp weapons to fight the police. Two police officers suffered stab wounds to their hands and hips.

    The incident, which occurred on Saturday at 5:00 p.m, saw the police chase down four alleged terrorists who rode two motorcycles.

    Two of them were shot in front of the Ngaglik district office, while the other two fled. Of the two, one allegedly hijacked a truck, injuring a passenger – the driver’s assistant – and forcing the driver to help him escape.

    Indonesia to strengthen manufacturing industry amid trade war: Minister

    The government is aiming to strengthen the Indonesian manufacturing industry and secure big investment projects in the face of global uncertainty and a trade war.

    On Monday, after attending a more than four-hour Cabinet meeting at the Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java, Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the government would guarantee the supply of raw material to manufacturing industries.

    The government would also ease the import tax burden to help the export-oriented industry be more competitive, he added.

    On investment, the government would provide incentives to labor intensive industries that relocated their factories, like those from West to Central Java, due to cheaper manufacturing costs, Airlangga said, adding that it would also give incentives to small and medium enterprises.

    He added that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo also requested minister to carry out a study on the production of 30 percent biodiesel blending (B30 blending) because the upgrade of B20 to B30 blending would increase the use of biodiesel by 500,000 tons per year.

    257 bottles of liquor abandoned in Soekarno-Hatta Airport toilet

    A confirmed total of 257 bottles of liquor kept in 26 suitcases were found at a toilet in Terminal 2 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.

    It is suspected that the owners of the bottles arrived at the airport on Sunday night on board a Lion Air Singapore-Jakarta flight, according to a statement made by the airport’s customs and excise official Hengky to tribunnews.com on Tuesday.

    “We received a report from the Avsec [aviation security] that there were bags left behind that contained 257 bottles of liquor.” Hengky said, adding that the authorities suspected the perpetrators intentionally chose the night flight from Singapore to mislead officers. The perpetrators, however, seemed to have decided to abandon the bottles, as the officers continued to vigilantly watch the airport.

    The perpetrators have yet to be found, Hengky said.
