    On 15 November 2023, the ‘EV Outlook for Indonesia: Future Reality or Myth’ embarked on a comprehensive exploration of the dynamic realm of electric vehicles (EVs) in Indonesia. Our speakers led our audience on a journey of in-depth investigation into the present landscape of EV advancement in Indonesia, encompassing government policies, automotive industry insights, and consumer perspectives.

    A wonderful Q&A session lasting nearly an hour ignited the room, as our diverse audience, representing a wide spectrum of industries, posed questions, offered comments, and provided feedback, solidifying the fervent interest in this topic.

    The topic presentation was given by Nicolas Meyer, Managing Director & Partner Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The event focused on “Electric Vehicles in Indonesia’ and included a discussion panel with Nicolas and three other leading representatives from the automotive industry, Kukuh Kumara, Secretary General Gaikindo; Aditya Siregar, Media Director Cintamobil.com; and last but not least Joel CY Chang, Group CEO Charged Indonesia. The panel was moderated by our own Singapore Chamber of Commerce Indonesia council member Damien Lim.

    Go-Jek revs into Singapore market with launch of beta app

    Ride-hailing company Go-Jek launched the beta version of its app in Singapore on Thursday (Nov 29), kicking off the roll-out of its services across the island.

    During this beta phase, Go-Jek said access to the app will be granted in batches to balance ride demand and service capabilities.

    At the initial stage, the app will be made available only in limited areas in Singapore. It can be downloaded from iOS and Android app stores in Singapore from Thursday.

    Online ads in Singapore offering Indonesian maids for sale

    Online ads in Singapore offering Indonesian maids for sale were Wednesday condemned as “unjust and demeaning”, in a rare flare-up of tensions between the neighbours over domestic helpers.

    Singapore is home to almost 250,000 maids, mostly from poor parts of Indonesia or the Philippines, who head to the wealthy city-state to earn higher salaries than they can back home.

    While Indonesia regularly protests about abuse and exploitation of helpers in Malaysia and parts of the Middle East, complaints about treatment of maids in tightly-regulated Singapore are less common.

    However reports that Indonesian helpers were being offered for sale in the city-state on online marketplace Carousell quickly drew condemnation from rights groups.

    The adverts under the user name “maid.recruitment” reportedly offered the services of several helpers from Indonesia, while some ads indicated maids had been “sold”.

    Facebook to build first Asian data centre in Singapore, investing S$1.4 billion

    Social media giant Facebook on Thursday (Sep 6) announced it will pour in more than S$1.4 billion to construct its first data centre in Asia in Singapore.

    The new facility, located at Tanjong Kling (formerly known as Data Centre Park) in the west of Singapore, will span 170,000 sq m and will “support hundreds of jobs”, the company said in its press release, adding it will form part of its growing presence in Singapore and across the region.

    Mr Thomas Furlong, vice president for Infrastructure Data Centers at Facebook, told reporters at the launch event that the new project will create “thousands of construction jobs”, while the facility will require “hundreds of operators” ranging from network maintenance to logistics staff. He added that given it is a long-term project, the company is still working out its staffing needs

    Singapore and Malaysia to announce joint decisions on HSR and RTS soon

    SINGAPORE: Singapore and Malaysia will announce their joint decisions on the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) link and Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) projects soon, said Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan on Thursday (Aug 30).

    In a Facebook post recapping a meeting with Malaysia’s Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, Mr Khaw said the two were “brainstorming ideas on how to further our bilateral relationship”.

    Kevin Kwan, author of Crazy Rich Asians, defaulted on his NS obligations: Mindef

    Singapore-born writer Kevin Kwan, whose book inspired the movie Crazy Rich Asians, defaulted on his national service obligations, the Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday in response to queries from The Straits Times.

    “Mr Kevin Kwan failed to register for National Service (NS) in 1990, despite notices and letters sent to his overseas address. He also stayed overseas without a valid exit permit. Mr Kwan is therefore wanted for defaulting on his NS obligations,” Mindef said.

    It added: “In 1994, his application and subsequent appeal to renounce his Singapore citizenship without serving NS were rejected.”

    The film’s weekend takings of over US$35 million (S$47.9 million) in the US has far exceeded expectations for the romantic comedy. It was also No. 1 at the US box office over the weekend.

    The movie, which was filmed in large part in Singapore and featured nearly 300 crew members who are Singaporean or Singapore permanent residents, had also been hailed as a breakthrough for racial representation in Hollywood and as a good showcase for Singapore.

    The movie was supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and the Singapore Film Commission.

    The Singapore Embassy holds a Singapore National Day reception in Jakarta

    Singapore National Day is celebrated every August 9th. In Indonesia, the excitement of Singapore National Day took place a week later, precisely on August 14, 2018. Located at Shangri La Hotel, Jakarta, Ambassador H.E. Anil Kumar Nayar invited Indonesian Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto and the audience to toast while celebrating the warmth of Singapore and Indonesia’s diplomatic relations.

    Minister Airlangga expressed his appreciation for the trust that Singapore built during the diplomatic relationship. Airlangga also thanked Singaporean business people who had invested in Indonesia, especially for two major projects, namely the construction of ports in Kendal and Digital Park in Batam.

    New Zealand to ban foreign home buyers – except Australians and Singaporeans

    New Zealand’s Parliament passed a law on Wednesday (Aug 15) to ban many non-resident foreigners from buying existing homes, completing the Labour-led government’s election campaign pledge.

    The ban only applies to non-residents. Australians and Singaporeans are exempted because of free-trade deals.

    Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s popular 38-year-old prime minister, campaigned before last September’s election on a promise to clamp down on house price growth and reduce high rates of homelessness, in part by banning foreign buyers.

    Mahathir wants to raise price of raw water sold to Singapore by more than 10 times

    Malaysia’s Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has said he wants to increase the price of raw water supply to Singapore by more than 10 times to reflect the higher cost of living.

    The current water agreement, which expires in 2061, sees Singapore drawing up to 250 million gallons a day (mgd) of raw water from the Johor River, and Johor entitled to 5mgd of treated water from Singapore.

    Singapore pays 3 sen (1 Singapore cent) per 1,000 gallons of raw water, and sells treated water back to Johor at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons. Singapore has said this price is heavily subsidised and below the cost of treating the water.
