Prison Guards Questioned Over Bribery Allegations
Jakarta. The National Police’s narcotics division has questioned two guards from the maximum-security prison on Nusakambangan island over allegations that they received bribes from former drug lord and death row prisoner Freddy Budiman.
“We were informed that the guards each received a car and a house. We are still investigating this. That’s why we brought the two guards in for questioning yesterday,” Brig. Gen. Anjan Pramuka Putra told news portal Detik.com on Thursday.
Freddy’s lucrative drug business was revealed by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in 2012 when its officers raided a truck containing 1.4 million ecstasy pills in Cengkareng, West Jakarta. He was sentenced to death in July 2013.
Within months of his sentencing Freddy was moved from Cipinang narcotics prison to Nusakambangan island prison, off Central Java, after he was found to have been operating his drug business from behind bars.
