    Minister Heng Swee Keat suffered stroke

    Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat, a key member of Singapore’s Cabinet who is regarded as a future leader of the country’s fourth-generation Government, suffered a stroke yesterday during a meeting with his colleagues at the Istana. With effect from last night, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will cover the duties of the Minister for Finance. Three Cabinet members who are also medical doctors rushed to his aid, managing to resuscitate the stricken minister before the ambulance arrived.

    3-in-1 Traffic policy to be scrapped

    The temporarily suspended 3-in-1 system in Jakarta will be permanently scrapped from next week after failing to ease traffic congestion and instead leading to rampant child exploitation. The finalization comes after a four-week suspension of the system — which bars private vehicles carrying less than three passengers from entering a number of main thoroughfares — ends this weekend. The scrapping is part of a larger plan to transition the city towards the long-awaited electronic road price (ERP) scheme. The technology and infrastructure for ERP is available but regulations and payment procedures are still being prepared by the administration.

    Domestic cement sales declined 4.4% in Apr 16

    According to Indonesia Cement Association (ASI), domestic cement sales volume came in at 4.56m tonnes in Apr 16, down 4.4% mom and flattish yoy. The bulk cement sales volume accounts for 24.5% of the total sales volume in Apr 16 (Mar 16: 22.4%). In 4M16, domestic sales volume rose 3.4% yoy to 18.99m tonnes with bulk cement sales accounting for 23.0% of total cement sales.

    Banks withhold expansion of ATMs with only 855 ATMs added in 1Q16

    Majority of the banks have decided not to aggressively expand the number of automatic teller machines (ATM) in order to save operational expenses. In 2015, total ATMs in the country amounted to 97,845. According to BBRI, this year the bank will add 1,500 machines (compared with a total of 20,876 ATMs as of Mar 16). BBCA (Bank Central Asia) will add 500 ATMs this year (total units owned as of Mar 16: 17,000).

    Domestic flights dominated by Lion Air, international flights dominated by Garuda.

    In 2015, the domestic flight market was dominated by Lion Air while the international flight market was dominated by Garuda Indonesia (GIAA). Lion Air carried 26.48m domestic passengers which accounted for 35% of total domestic passengers of 76.62m in 2015, while Garuda Indonesia (GIAA) flew 19.96m passengers, representing of 26% of 2015’s total domestic passengers. Garuda Indonesia (GIAA) dominated the international flights by carried 4.17m passenger (or market share of 16.54%), followed by Indonesia Air Asia with 3.66m passengers (market share of 15%).
